Public and Private Sector Pay Differences

I am not quite sure what to conclude from this publication from National Statistics (other than measuring these differences is a complicated exercise) but, call me a nerd, I found it interesting non-the-less.

I suppose the thing that stood out most was that on average, the public sector earns more than the private sector across every age bracket.

I would not have expected this to be the case – generally people assume that the private sector work longer hours but get paid more – clearly not the case. As more public sector employees join the private sector it would be interesting to look at this again next year…

The analysis looked out hourly pay to remove the differences in the number of hours worked. You do see that people in the private sector work longer hours on average, which when looking at weekly pay gives a slightly different story. Although this is not a fair comparison of pay between the two sectors because of the differences in hours.
